On Friday morning, the National Weather Service had Extreme Heat Warnings posted across a broad stretch of southern Arizona — Tucson, the Sonoran Desert corridor, and communities stretching toward Yuma — with daytime highs running well above 110°F and overnight lows that refused to drop below 90°F. KGUN 9 covered the ongoing warnings this week. The coverage, like most heat coverage, explained what was happening. It did not explain what a multi-day extreme heat event costs a household that is not ready for it.
That gap is what this piece is for.
What's actually changing
Single-day heat events are a feature of Arizona summers. Multi-day events where nighttime lows stay above 90°F are the more dangerous pattern, and they are becoming longer. When overnight temperatures stay elevated, building materials — concrete slab floors, stucco walls, tile roofs — never fully discharge the heat they absorbed during the day. By day three or four, the interior of an un-air-conditioned or poorly cooled home can exceed outdoor temperatures from the day before. That is not a hypothetical. Maricopa County's heat-related death data, published annually, shows that a significant portion of heat fatalities happen indoors, in homes with non-functional or absent air conditioning.
The second thing changing is grid load. APS and TEP both publish real-time demand data, and during Extreme Heat Warning events, the system runs near peak capacity for extended stretches. That is not a prediction about blackouts — Arizona's grid operators have managed these loads so far — but it is a fact that the margin for error shrinks. A localized equipment failure during a multi-day event carries more consequence than the same failure in October.
The third factor is cost. Running central AC continuously in a southern Arizona home during an Extreme Heat Warning event is not cheap. Recent utility rate structures in the state include demand charges and time-of-use tiers that can push a single month's bill sharply higher. Service your AC unit now, not after it fails.
