The National Weather Service's Austin/San Antonio forecast office has been issuing heat advisories in cycles since early June, but this latest round carries something extra. A report from the Austin American-Statesman this week flagged not just the return of triple-digit heat to Texas on Sunday, but wildfire smoke drifting across portions of the country — a combination that changes the risk calculus for households in meaningful ways.
Heat alone is a known quantity for Texans. Smoke-plus-heat is less familiar, and it is more dangerous than either threat alone.
What is actually changing
Wildfire smoke is not just an aesthetic nuisance. Fine particulate matter — PM2.5 — reaches concentrations during smoke events that can exceed what most household HVAC filters are designed to handle at their standard maintenance interval. When outdoor air quality degrades and temperatures are simultaneously above 100°F, you lose the option you'd normally use: open the windows to vent heat before it builds up. You are sealed inside with whatever air your system is recirculating.
Texas households that rely on older or undersized air conditioning units face a compounding problem. The system runs longer, filter loading increases faster, and if the filter clogs enough to restrict airflow, the unit starts cycling inefficiently or failing outright — precisely when it is needed most.
ERCOT has managed peak demand events in recent summers without the rolling outages of 2021, but any prolonged heat dome raises grid stress. The Texas grid's reserve margins historically tighten in the late afternoon hours on consecutive high-demand days. That is not a prediction; it is a pattern the Public Utility Commission of Texas has documented in its own post-event reviews.
The smoke variable is newer. NOAA's Air Quality Index tracker, which aggregates state-level monitoring data, has shown Central and North Texas reaching "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" thresholds during western wildfire events in recent years. With smoke reported across parts of the nation this week, Texas residents — particularly in the I-35 corridor and the Panhandle — should be checking AirNow.gov alongside the temperature forecast.
What we'd actually do
Check your HVAC filter today, not next month. A filter that was acceptable in May may be at or past its useful life by mid-July under continuous operation. Pull it out and hold it up to a light source. If you cannot see light through it clearly, replace it. A clogged filter makes your system work harder and, during a smoke event, provides less actual particulate capture. A standard MERV-8 filter costs under $15 at most Texas hardware stores; a MERV-11 or MERV-13 runs $20–$30 and captures fine smoke particles measurably better. Do not go higher than MERV-13 without confirming your system can handle the added static pressure — ask an HVAC tech if you are unsure.

Run a box fan with a MERV-13 furnace filter taped to the intake side; this is a widely-cited DIY approach that costs roughly $40 in materials and measurably reduces indoor PM2.5 during smoke events. This room is where young children, elderly family members, and anyone with asthma should spend the middle of the day.
Register for your county's emergency alerts if you have not already. Most Texas counties operate through the state's Alert Texas system or county-specific platforms like Warn Central Texas or CodeRED. These push notifications for heat emergencies, air quality advisories, and grid stress events directly to your phone. A two-minute registration is the lowest-effort preparedness action on this list.
Know the location of your nearest county cooling center before you need it. Texas counties and city emergency management offices maintain lists of designated cooling centers that open during heat emergencies. Austin's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Houston's HCPH, and the Dallas Office of Emergency Management each publish real-time lists. These centers also tend to have filtered air, which matters more this year than it did five years ago.

The bigger picture
Texas summers have always required preparation. What has shifted is the overlap of threats: heat, smoke, grid stress, and the physical limitations of aging housing stock are converging more often in the same week.
