A report this week from WSMV noted that Middle Tennessee residents are seeing unusually orange and pink sunsets, with haze dulling daytime visibility across the region. The cause, as it almost always is during summer months across the Eastern U.S., is smoke transported at altitude from wildfires burning well to the west or northwest.
The sunsets are genuinely beautiful. The air quality question is more complicated.
What's actually happening in the atmosphere
Smoke at altitude and smoke at breathing height are different problems. When a wildfire plume rides high-pressure ridges at 10,000 feet or more, it scatters red wavelengths and produces those striking sunsets without necessarily degrading surface air quality. But those layers are not static. Mixing, subsidence, and local convection — afternoon thunderstorms are common across Tennessee in August — can push elevated smoke down to where people breathe it.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) monitors surface-level particulate matter (PM2.5) through its AirNow network, and Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga all have sensors that report in near real-time at AirNow.gov. The visual haze you see in the sky is not a reliable proxy for what the PM2.5 monitor on your nearest station is reading. Check the number, not the color of the sky.
Fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke is chemically different from urban particulate pollution. It carries more polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and acrolein. Short-term exposure at moderate AQI levels (roughly 101-150, the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range) produces measurable respiratory effects in people with asthma, COPD, and cardiovascular disease. Children and pregnant women are also in that sensitive category.
Tennessee doesn't have California's wildfire exposure history baked into its public health infrastructure, which means most households here have not thought through a smoke response plan.
What we'd actually do
Pull up AirNow.gov and set a Tennessee location as your default. The site shows current AQI by zip code and a next-day forecast. Set Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, or your nearest monitoring city and check it the same way you'd check a weather app. The difference between an AQI of 80 and 160 is a meaningful health decision, not a cosmetic one.
Identify your home's real ventilation weak points before the next event. Most Tennessee homes built before 2005 have significant air infiltration — older window seals, gaps around HVAC penetrations, bathroom exhaust fans that don't fully seal when off. During a smoke event, the goal is to reduce air changes per hour. Close windows and doors, switch your HVAC to recirculate rather than fresh-air intake, and run it on fan-only if outdoor temps allow. They are not comfortable for hours of wear, but for moving between your car and building, yard work during a moderate smoke day, or helping a neighbor, they are genuinely effective against PM2.5 where a cloth or surgical mask is not.
Know where your household's respiratory weak points are before smoke thickens. If anyone in your home uses a rescue inhaler, this week is a reasonable time to confirm it isn't expired, the prescription is current, and the person knows their action plan. August in Tennessee means smoke season can overlap with peak heat and humidity — conditions that compound respiratory stress.
Don't rely on county-level advisories alone. TDEC issues air quality alerts, but they lag real-time sensor data by design. AirNow's sensor map, PurpleAir (crowd-sourced, less regulated but faster), and the Weather.gov hazardous weather outlook for your forecast zone are all worth bookmarking.
The bigger picture
Tennessee has never been at the center of the wildfire conversation. That geography is shifting. Drought conditions across the mid-South and the broader pattern of smoke transport from western fires means that Middle Tennessee residents will see more summers like this one. The haze this week may clear by the weekend. The underlying exposure risk will be back.
The goal here isn't a bunker and a gas mask. It's a $40 DIY air cleaner, a current inhaler prescription, and a bookmark to AirNow.gov. That's the difference between a household that reacts in a panic during a Code Red day and one that has already thought it through.
