That's the real story. Not the peak temperature, but the gap between what the built environment can handle and what the atmosphere is now delivering with increasing regularity.
What's actually changing

The state's overnight lows in desert regions are rising faster than daytime peaks, which matters enormously for household resilience. Homes that cool down between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. can reset. The households that come through these events without incident are not the ones with the most gear. They are the ones who thought through their actual vulnerabilities — an elderly neighbor, an HVAC unit that's been struggling since April, a block that loses power first — and closed those gaps before the temperature peaked.
