A heat advisory covering Kiowa County on Sunday, reported by the Kiowa County Press, put triple-digit temperatures over the southeast corner of Colorado. That region — flat, exposed, far from the nearest hospital in many cases — is the canary. What happens in the High Plains corridor between La Junta and the Kansas border in late July is a preview of what the rest of the state's non-mountain households face as summer matures.
This is not a freak event. Colorado's southeastern counties have seen heat advisories stack up through July with shorter recovery windows between them. That pattern matters more than any single day's high temperature.
What's actually changing
The risk is not just heat. It's duration plus isolation plus grid load.
When ambient temperatures stay above 80°F overnight, homes that lost cooling during the day do not recover. A house in Pueblo or Lamar that hit 95°F indoors at 4 p.m. can still be 88°F at midnight if the overnight low stays in the mid-70s — which is increasingly common on the Eastern Plains. That erases the passive cooling buffer most older homes were built to rely on.
The second issue is grid stress. Xcel Energy and Black Hills Energy both serve large portions of eastern and southern Colorado. Extended heat events drive simultaneous peak demand across their service territories. Rolling curtailments are not routine here yet, but they are not hypothetical either. A multi-day heat dome that blankets the Arkansas River Valley and the Front Range simultaneously puts real pressure on transmission infrastructure built for a different demand curve.
The third issue is that rural southeast Colorado households — Kiowa, Prowers, Baca, and Crowley counties — face drive times to cooling centers that urban residents do not. If your car's AC fails during a heat emergency 40 miles from a hospital, the margin for error is slim.
What we'd actually do
Audit every household member's heat tolerance right now, not during the event. Elderly relatives, infants, and anyone on diuretics, beta-blockers, or antipsychotics face physiologically different risks in heat. Make a written list. Know who in your household needs active cooling — not just a fan — to stay safe, and what "active cooling" specifically means for them. A box fan moving 95°F air does not cool a body; it only feels like it does until it doesn't.
Identify your nearest cooling center and confirm its hours before you need it. Colorado's county public health offices post cooling center locations during declared heat events, but those locations change year to year and sometimes day to day. The El Paso County and Pueblo County health departments have historically maintained searchable lists. If you live in a rural county, call your county's emergency management office now and ask directly — that number should be in your phone before July is over.
Set a household power-outage protocol for heat, separate from your winter outage plan. Winter outage prep (candles, blankets, camp stove) is actively dangerous in a summer heat emergency. Write down: at what indoor temperature does your household leave? Where do you go? Who do you call first? If you have a generator, confirm it can run a window AC unit — not all portable generators are sized for the startup surge load of even a small AC.
Insulate your water supply from heat. In a prolonged outage, water stored in a garage or shed can reach temperatures that accelerate bacterial growth. Move emergency water stores to the coolest interior room you have, and rotate them. A household that loses power for 36 hours in 105°F heat has a water-management problem as much as a cooling problem.
Check your vehicle's cooling system before the next heat event, not during it. Radiator coolant, belt condition, and AC refrigerant are maintenance items that get deferred. In Kiowa County or anywhere on the Eastern Plains, a vehicle breakdown in triple-digit heat with no cell signal is a medical emergency. The repair is cheaper than the alternative.
The bigger picture
Colorado does not have a monolithic heat risk. A household in Telluride at 8,750 feet has almost nothing in common with a household in Springfield at 4,300 feet during a July heat advisory. The danger of treating "Colorado summer" as a single category is that the plains households — who are more exposed and more isolated — end up relying on mountain-state assumptions that do not apply to them.
Durability in this context means knowing your specific household's vulnerabilities before the thermometer moves. The Kiowa County advisory this week is a free rehearsal. Use it.
