A report this week from AZ Family flagged a dangerous heat event moving into Arizona, with temperatures in the Valley and lower desert elevations expected to climb to levels that kill cooling equipment, crash power grids under load, and turn an ordinary power outage into a life-threatening event within hours.

That last part is the one the forecast doesn't spell out.

What's actually changing

July heat in Phoenix is expected. What makes certain events different is the combination of overnight low temperatures and duration. When overnight lows stay above 90°F for multiple consecutive nights, residential homes stop shedding heat the way they normally do. Your walls, your attic, your concrete slab — they store heat all day and release almost none of it overnight. By day three of a sustained event, the interior of an un-air-conditioned or under-cooled home can be warmer than the outside air at 2 a.m.

HVAC systems are also more likely to fail during extended heat events. Units that have been running at or near capacity for weeks are not well-positioned for a spike. Refrigerant pressure rises, capacitors and contactors wear faster, and the condensate drain lines that clear humidity (less of an issue in dry desert heat, but still) can gum up. The Arizona Department of Health Services consistently reports the majority of heat-related deaths in Maricopa County occur indoors, in residences, often during or just after an equipment failure.

This week's event lands in late July, which means Arizona households are already four to six weeks into peak cooling season. That matters for equipment condition, for household energy reserves, and for the mental fatigue that makes people skip the checks they should be doing.

Get eyes on your HVAC unit today, not when it stops working. Walk outside and look at the condenser. The coils should be clean and the fan should spin freely. If you haven't had a service call in over a year, call now — not because this is a panic move, but because technicians in metro Phoenix are booked out days or weeks during peak events. Check your medications. Several common prescription drugs — including some blood pressure medications, diuretics, antihistamines, and antidepressants — impair the body's ability to regulate heat or increase sensitivity to dehydration. If anyone in your household takes daily prescriptions, a five-minute conversation with a pharmacist about heat interaction is worth doing. This is one of the most consistently overlooked household heat-prep steps.

Set a 72-hour water floor and don't let it drop. One gallon per person per day is the standard floor for emergency water storage. During extreme heat, a more realistic figure for an active adult in Arizona is closer to two gallons. If your household has three people and you lose power — and with it, your well pump or your ability to store chilled water — three days at two gallons each is 18 gallons.
