An extreme heat warning from the National Weather Service is not the same thing as a heat advisory. The advisory means conditions are uncomfortable and risky for vulnerable people. The warning means the heat index is expected to hit levels — typically 108°F or higher, sustained — where healthy adults can get into serious trouble within hours of unprotected outdoor exposure. The Houston Chronicle reported this week that Southeast Texas crossed that threshold on Wednesday, triggering the warning for the greater Houston metro and surrounding counties.
If you live anywhere in the Gulf Coast corridor — Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Montgomery — this is not a routine summer headline.
What the "extreme" label actually means for your home
The warning designation matters for a reason that most news coverage skips: your house is part of your cooling system, and extreme heat events stress it differently than ordinary hot days.
ERCOT, the Texas grid operator, has publicly tracked demand spikes during sustained heat events. When overnight lows stay in the upper 80s — common in the Houston humidity band — your home never fully releases the heat it absorbed during the day. Insulation works in both directions: it holds heat in as effectively as it holds it out. Over consecutive warning days, interior temperatures in homes without AC can rise faster than the outdoor air, not slower.
Your AC unit is also under strain you may not notice until it fails. Units that run continuously in high humidity are more likely to freeze the evaporator coil, reduce airflow, or trip a breaker — all of which cut cooling at exactly the wrong moment.
Grid stress is real but often overstated in the media. ERCOT has added significant generation capacity since the 2021 freeze. That said, demand peaks during late-afternoon hours on consecutive warning days, and localized outages from transformer overloads at the neighborhood level remain a realistic scenario regardless of grid-wide stability.
What we'd actually do
Check your AC filter and condenser this week, not next month. A clogged filter forces the system to work harder, reduces airflow, and increases the odds of a coil freeze during sustained operation. Pull the filter — if you can't see light through it, replace it. Walk outside and look at the condenser unit: it needs 18 inches of clearance and should be free of grass clippings and debris. This takes twenty minutes and costs nothing if you already have a filter on hand.
Identify your nearest NWS-designated cooling center before you need it. Harris County and the City of Houston maintain cooling center lists through their emergency management offices — search "Harris County cooling centers" and bookmark the page now, not after a power outage when you're working off cellular data with a low battery. If you live outside Harris County, check your county emergency management page or call 211, the Texas statewide social services line.
Stage a heat kit in one accessible place. This is not about buying gear. It's about consolidating what you already have: electrolyte packets or sports drinks (not water alone — sustained sweating depletes sodium), a battery-operated or hand fan, a manual can opener if your emergency food requires it, and a portable phone charger kept charged. The goal is to find everything in under two minutes in a dark or disorienting situation.
Know your household's actual heat vulnerability profile. Adults over 65, infants, anyone on diuretics, beta-blockers, or antipsychotic medications, and people with cardiovascular or kidney conditions face meaningfully elevated risk in extreme heat. If anyone in your household fits that description, the calculus on "we can tough it out" changes. Have an explicit plan — a specific person you'll call, a specific place you'll go — before the temperature hits.
Pre-cool your home deliberately on warning days. If you're on a time-of-use electricity plan (common with TXU, Reliant, and other retail providers in Texas), cooling your home aggressively in the morning before peak pricing hours — typically 3–7 p.m. — reduces both your bill and your grid load contribution. Drop the thermostat a few degrees in the late morning. The thermal mass of your home will hold that cooler air longer than you'd expect.
The bigger picture
Southeast Texas has always been hot. What changes in a warning event is the margin for error. The body's cooling mechanisms work by dissipating heat to the surrounding air — and when that air is already at 100°F with 70 percent humidity, the gap closes fast. You don't need to catastrophize to take this seriously. You need to treat your home as a system under load, know where the exits are if that system fails, and make the few low-cost adjustments that extend your safe operating window.
Durability isn't about having the perfect setup. It's about not being caught flat-footed when an ordinary summer becomes an extraordinary one.
