A recent report from NASA Science (.gov) captured satellite imagery of smoke blanketing Oregon, a visual that anyone who spent last August coughing through a Portland or Medford afternoon will recognize immediately. The smoke is not a background fact this summer. It is the weather.
Oregon's wildfire smoke problem has compounded over the past decade, and the Cascade Range does nothing to protect the Willamette Valley when a large fire burns on the eastern slope or in the Klamath Basin. Bend, Eugene, and Ashland have all logged multi-day stretches with Air Quality Index readings in the "unhealthy" or "very unhealthy" range in recent summers. Coastal communities are not exempt — onshore winds can push smoke from both Oregon and Northern California fires directly into Lincoln City or Coos Bay.
The issue for households is not the dramatic days when sky turns orange. Most people retreat indoors then. The risk accumulates on the moderate smoke days — AQI in the 101-150 range — when people leave windows open, take long walks, and keep the HVAC system cycling outdoor air without thinking twice.
What's actually changing
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) operates an air quality monitoring network, but coverage is uneven. Rural Grant and Harney counties have fewer sensors than the Portland metro, which means eastern Oregon households often have less real-time data when smoke from local BLM-managed land ignites. The DEQ's AirNow integration and the AirNow.gov federal portal remain the most reliable free resources.
NASA's satellite-based smoke tracking — visible in products like Worldview and FIRMS — fills some of that gap. It cannot measure what you're breathing at street level, but it tells you where smoke plumes are moving and whether the plume hitting your ZIP code originated from a small coastal brush fire or a 100,000-acre event in the Cascades. That distinction matters for how long elevated AQI will last.
One thing the NASA imagery does not tell you: how well your house seals against fine particulate matter (PM2.5). A 2,000-square-foot ranch house in Springfield with original windows and no door weatherstripping can exchange air with the outside roughly once per hour under normal conditions. That means a PM2.5 reading of 150 outside translates to something approaching 100 inside within a few hours, even with all windows closed.
What we'd actually do
Buy a HEPA air purifier sized for your primary bedroom, not your living room. One room done right beats a whole house done poorly. A purifier rated for at least 350 square feet with a true HEPA filter (not "HEPA-type") will meaningfully reduce PM2.5 in a closed bedroom within 30 minutes. Run it on high before you sleep on smoke nights. Cost at most retailers: under $150 for a mid-range unit with replacement filters included.
Set up an AQI alert on your phone through AirNow or the Oregon DEQ's free notification service. Do this now, not during the next event. Both services let you choose a threshold — we'd suggest 100 as the trigger, not 150, because by 150 you've already been breathing degraded air for hours. Weatherstrip the one door in your house that leaks. On most Oregon homes, that's either the front door or a garage-to-house entry. A foam or rubber weatherstripping kit runs $10-20 at any hardware store and takes under an hour. It also reduces heating costs in November. Smoke events are short; the seal works year-round.
Keep a box of N95 masks accessible, not in storage. Not for the doomsday scenario — for the Tuesday morning when the AQI is 140 and your kid needs to walk to summer camp or you have a 20-minute walk from the MAX station to your office. A box of 20 N95s from a hardware store costs roughly $25. Store them in the car's glovebox and by the front door, not in a bin in the garage.
Check on elderly neighbors and anyone in your household with asthma or COPD before smoke days get bad. Oregon DEQ typically issues air quality advisories 12-24 hours in advance during active fire season. That window is enough to make sure vulnerable people have a cool, filtered space to spend the day.
The bigger picture
Smoke season in Oregon is no longer exceptional. It is a recurring constraint on outdoor life, roughly June through September, with some years worse than others. The household goal is not to build a bunker — it's to have simple systems that absorb the disruption without drama: a filtered room, an alert on your phone, a mask by the door.
