The Watch

Cumulative jobs cut, AI-attributed

A running total of announced job cuts where the employer cited AI, automation, or AI-driven restructuring. It only goes up — this is not a year-to-date figure that resets, and not a count of jobs already gone.

81,650announced job cutsacross 15 announcements

81,650 of the ~175,000 shown in The Watch, plotted by company below. The ticker counts AI-attributed layoffs together with cancelled hiring plans, taken from press aggregates. This page plots only what a named company announced on a specific date with a specific headcount — the share of that figure traceable to a source.

Every announcement, as it landed

The total steps rather than slopes, because that is how it actually moves — quiet for weeks, then a single disclosure adds five figures in a day. Hover any point for the company and the headcount.

How we count this

A running total, not a year-to-date count: it accumulates from the first logged announcement onward and never resets in January. Today it begins in January 2026, which is where our log starts — earlier announcements will be added as they are verified, and the total will rise accordingly. A hand-maintained log, not an automated feed — there is no authoritative API for layoff announcements. We record an entry only when both a specific date and a specific headcount were reported, which means several known 2026 announcements are deliberately absent: Oracle's March cuts ("thousands"), Microsoft's spring voluntary separations (undisclosed), Google's rolling reductions (estimates only), and General Motors' 500-600 range. Two prominent 2026 cuts are also absent on purpose: Uber's 3,300 in September, because Uber attributed it to reducing management layers rather than to AI (the AI framing came from outside commentators, not the company), and HP's 4,000-6,000, which was announced in November 2025 as a range spanning three fiscal years. August 2026 added almost nothing here, which is not an oversight: AI-attributed cuts that month totalled roughly 3,462 across the whole market, the lowest since December 2025. Announcements are what a company said it would cut, on the day it said so; actual separations lag by months and some never happen. This total is therefore a floor on announced intent and is smaller than the headline indicator, which also counts cancelled hiring plans. Entries are added as they are reported and are never revised downward silently — corrections appear as edits with the date noted.

This one is maintained by hand. No authoritative feed publishes layoff announcements, so entries are added as they are reported. If we have missed one, tell us: editor@middleclassprepper.com.
