That stability has rested on one assumption: that there are more mid-level engineering problems than the industry can solve without mid-level engineers. The argument is not that software engineers are disappearing. It's that the distribution is compressing. Entry-level tasks — writing boilerplate, debugging isolated functions, generating test coverage — are increasingly handled by AI tools that a single senior engineer can supervise. The senior tier stays, because judgment, architecture decisions, and client relationships still require it. The junior tier recovers, because someone has to prompt, review, and maintain what AI produces.
