Kansas had planted roughly 5.5 million acres of corn heading into this growing season, continuing a multi-year trend of expanded acreage as farmers diversified away from winter wheat. The damage, however, was not evenly distributed. Western Kansas — already operating on the margins of the Ogallala Aquifer's declining water table — bore the heaviest losses, with some county-level yield estimates running 30 to 50 percent below the five-year average.
