The aquifer system that supplies drinking water to millions of Floridians is running below normal levels as drought conditions continue across the state, according to a report this week from Action News Jax. The Floridan Aquifer System — one of the most productive aquifer systems in the world and the primary source of freshwater for much of Florida, Georgia, and parts of South Carolina and Alabama — has seen water table levels decline as rainfall deficits compound over consecutive dry months.

Florida has been contending with drought conditions that have stretched through much of 2026. The U.S. Drought Monitor has classified significant portions of the Florida peninsula under moderate to severe drought designations in recent weeks, with some regions reaching extreme drought status. When rainfall fails to recharge the aquifer at normal rates, withdrawals for municipal water systems, agriculture, and industrial use outpace what is being replenished naturally.

The Floridan Aquifer is a karst system — meaning it is composed of porous limestone that water moves through relatively quickly compared to other aquifer types. That characteristic makes it highly productive but also means it responds to surface conditions, including drought, more rapidly than confined aquifers buried under impermeable rock layers. When the water table drops, springs fed by the aquifer — Florida has more first-magnitude springs than any other state — also experience reduced flow, which carries downstream effects on river ecosystems and the estuaries they feed.

What the standard drought coverage rarely addresses is how aquifer drawdown interacts with household and small-property water infrastructure specifically. Private well owners across rural and exurban Florida draw directly from the Floridan or the shallower surficial aquifer above it, and those wells do not carry the redundancy that municipal systems maintain. When water table levels fall below a well's pump intake — a depth determined at the time the well was drilled, not recalculated as conditions change — the well can lose yield or go dry without warning. Unlike a municipal notice of a boil-water advisory, a private well simply stops producing, and the homeowner is typically the last to know there was a systemic problem building. For households on private wells in drought-affected counties, water storage capacity becomes a direct functional gap rather than a theoretical one.
