The piece is a useful prompt to stop treating smoke as atmosphere and start treating it as a respiratory hazard with a household action plan.
What wildfire smoke actually contains
The "smoke" that rolls off a burning lodgepole pine or sage flat is not one substance. It is a mixture of fine and ultrafine particles, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and compounds that form when vegetation, soil, and structures burn together. The particles that do the most damage — PM2.5 and smaller — are invisible to the eye and travel deep into lung tissue. They do not trigger the coughing reflex the way coarser particles do, which is part of why people underestimate exposure.
Colorado's geography makes this worse. Smoke concentrations along the Front Range frequently spike overnight and in the early morning when cooler air settles into valleys. Run a HEPA air purifier in the room where your household sleeps. A quality unit sized for your bedroom — roughly 200 to 350 square feet of coverage — will filter PM2.5 to below outdoor ambient levels within about 30 minutes of operation. Consumer models from established brands run $80 to $200. This is not a gear recommendation for its own sake; it is the one intervention with consistent real-world evidence behind it. If you can only buy one, put it in the bedroom, because that is where you spend eight uninterrupted hours breathing.
Stock N95 respirators and know when they actually help. An N95 worn correctly filters 95 percent of airborne particles above 0.3 microns. Worn loosely over a beard or pulled down under the nose, it filters nearly nothing. Buy a box of 10 to 20 NIOSH-approved N95s (not KN95s, which have a weaker domestic certification standard), learn how to do a seal check, and store them somewhere accessible. They matter for outdoor chores on smoke days — mowing, gardening, walking the dog — not for casual indoor use where a purifier does more.
Identify your household's two most vulnerable members and make a smoke plan with them explicitly. If you have a child with asthma, an elderly parent, or someone recovering from a cardiac event, "stay inside on bad days" is not a plan — it's a wish. A real plan names who monitors AQI, what threshold triggers indoor-only protocols, whether that person has enough medication on hand for a week of restricted outdoor activity, and who they call if symptoms escalate.
