IQAir's live California wildfire map, updated continuously through this week, shows smoke corridors running from active fire perimeters in Northern California down through the Central Valley and into parts of the Bay Area and Southern California foothills. The AQI readings flickering across that map are not just numbers for weather apps. They are a proxy for decisions you need to make inside your house right now.
What is actually changing
California fire season used to mean six to eight weeks of elevated risk in October. CAL FIRE data over the past several years shows the window has expanded in both directions. Fires are igniting in June. Some are still burning in December. That shift has a direct consequence most household preparedness guides don't address: the people who need to protect indoor air quality are no longer doing it for a short burst. They are managing a recurring, multi-month exposure problem.
IQAir categorizes AQI above 150 as "Unhealthy" for the general population, not just sensitive groups. Above 200, the agency labels it "Very Unhealthy." During major fire events in California, readings in affected inland valleys and coastal corridors routinely cross both thresholds within hours of a wind shift. The danger isn't only to people with asthma or COPD. Wildfire particulate matter — PM2.5, particles smaller than 2.5 microns — penetrates deep into the lungs and enters the bloodstream. Short-term heavy exposure has been linked in peer-reviewed literature to increased cardiac events, not just respiratory distress.
The indoor air problem is underappreciated. California homes are not airtight. Check your HVAC filter rating and replace it before the next smoke event, not during it. MERV 13 filters capture roughly 85 percent of particles in the 1-3 micron range, compared to roughly 50 percent for MERV 8. The upgrade costs about $20-$35 per filter at any hardware store. The tradeoff is slightly reduced airflow, which most residential systems handle without issue. Check your furnace or air handler manual for the maximum MERV rating it supports — most handle up to MERV 13 without straining the blower motor. Buy two or three filters now and store them. During a major fire week, store shelves go empty within 48 hours.
Build a single-room clean air refuge using a box fan and a 20x20 furnace filter. This is not a gimmick. It is a method validated by the EPA's indoor air quality guidance and tested by researchers at the University of California Davis. A 20-inch box fan taped to a 20x20 MERV 13 filter creates a low-cost air cleaner that can bring PM2.5 down significantly in a medium-sized bedroom. The total cost is under $40 if you don't already own a box fan. Designate one room — ideally with fewer windows and the fewest penetrations — as your smoke shelter.
Audit your supply of any respiratory or cardiac medications, and talk to your doctor before fire season peaks. If anyone in your household uses an inhaler, takes medications for heart arrhythmia, or has a diagnosed respiratory condition, a smoke event is the wrong time to discover you have a five-day supply left. California's insurance rules allow early prescription refills under certain circumstances, including declared emergencies. Call your pharmacy now, before your county is under a smoke advisory.
Download the IQAir or EPA AirNow app and set a threshold alert for your zip code. Do not wait for local news to tell you air quality is dangerous. Both apps allow you to set push notifications when AQI in your area crosses a threshold you define. Set yours at 100 — the boundary between "Moderate" and "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups." That gives you lead time to close windows, switch your HVAC to recirculate, and get your clean-air room set up before the smoke settles in.
Know your evacuation route and keep your car's gas tank above half during fire season. This is not about fleeing California. It is about the specific geometry of wildfire evacuations. CAL FIRE and California OES data from recent evacuations show that the roads most likely to be congested or closed are the most obvious ones. Map a secondary route out of your neighborhood now, while you can think clearly, and note which roads cross ridgelines or canyons that close early. A tank above half means you are not competing for gas station access during an evacuation order.
The bigger picture
California's wildfire risk is not going away, and the household response to it is not a one-time gear purchase. It is an annual maintenance cycle: filter inventory, medication supply, air quality monitoring, evacuation route review. None of those actions require a bunker or a six-figure investment. They require the same thing good maintenance always requires — doing the undramatic work before the emergency, not during it.
The goal is not to survive a catastrophe. It is to remain functional through a disruption that, in California, is becoming a predictable seasonal feature of life.
